Methotrexate Volcano

So twice now when I've done my Methotrexate injection during really hot and humid weather, a little bubble of the toxic stuff has come oozing back out of my body when I've withdrawn the needle from my leg.

Ewwwwwww!

And it's not as if I've injected it any faster than usual or anything.

Weird, no?

  1. You're right; it's weird. Sometimes a little drop of my Enbrel oozes back out, so I'm guessing the same thing's going on with your mtx. I hadn't connected it to the weather, though. I finally put some of those little round bandaids with my sharps container so at least I can cover the spot up and keep my clothes clean.

Do you think it's the weather?

  2. I've never had it happen with my Enbrel, just the Methotrexate, and only on those two really hot, hot, hot (and humid) days.

We'll see if anyone else has had a similar experience!

  3. That happens to me, too - it happened last night! I've got absolutely no idea why.

The other thing that drives me crazy is that after I pull the needle back out of the vial, the methotrexate shoots all over the place. I always end up getting some on my shirt or on the furniture. I don't know how to get it to stop doing that.

  4. I am fairly new to Enbrel but I had it happen twice.

  5. I take MTX orally but, like WarmSocks, had Enbrel ooze back out on me when I was using it. It always bothered me when it did, I was very careful with each injection, but somehow, every once in a while, I would get some blow back (motorcycle term) lol.

  6. Hey Helen,

I've never had the stuff shoot all over the place after pulling the needle back out of the vial. I can hear some air or something escape, but no MTX on anything luckily.

And Cathy + Tharr, nothing for me on the Enbrel front, which is weird when you think about it, since I'm injecting twice as much Enbrel as Methotrexate (50 vs. 25 mg) and the stuff gets pumped in pretty fast with the auto-injector.

I'm sure a physics expert could explain it all..

  7. I've always wondered why sometimes some leaks out, and sometimes it doesn't. Never made a weather connection, though. Totally bizarre that it's just the mtx...

  8. ahhh!! I am reading your entries backwards and just commented on the other one asking you about this because it happened to me this past sunday!! Lol It was really weird and i freaked out because it really looked like not much got in my leg at all so i loaded up another syringe with a little more to insert.

  9. It is bizarre, Skye. It's only ever been a little bubble of the stuff, though, so I haven't worried about it. I do inject a little more slowly now and make sure my leg is relaxed and the muscles definitely aren't clenched... Good luck with your shots and everything else; I hope you're well!
